A little bit about Queensway Cathedral…

From the outset of Queensway Cathedral’s ministry we have sought to bring people to the Lord. Each phase of the church’s development has been marked by a witness to the saving grace found in Jesus Christ and by a harvest of souls.

The vision for the Queensway Cathedral of today began late one evening as brother Hutchinson sat in his living room and came across an ad in a newspaper for an Anglican Church for sale. This was beginning of the church known at the Queensway Full Gospel Church located on 15 High Street, in Humber Bay.

September 13th, 1953 was the opening Sunday. At first Pastor Ness preached to only his own family and his mother-in-law. Two years later the congregation of some 30 adults, sending God’s desire for the city, went into a building program at 123 Lakeshore Road. On August 15th, 1955 the footings were poured for Lakeshore Gospel Temple, which had seating for 500 people.

The congregation and Sunday School grew very rapidly and this building was soon inadequate for facilitating the spiritual growth of the community. The congregation, on May 18th, 1960 made the decision to purchase 5.5 acres of land at 1536 The Queensway. Construction began for a new dome-shaped facility called Queensway Cathedral. This was a 1500 seat centre for evangelism in the City of Toronto. The dedication service was held September 23rd, 1962.

God gave souls and by 1984 the congregation was too large for the dome. Once again, construction began while the congregation worshipped at the Club Kingsway for one year. On March 3rd, 1985 they marched back to 1536 The Queensway, the present Queensway Cathedral.

Through prayer and outreach, evangelism and missions, the people of Queensway Cathedral have faithfully laboured to build the household of God for His honour and glory. As we continue to worship and serve together, we anticipate that God will continue to build the house with people in whom He dwells.
